This is meteorological and oceanographic data. DSI-1165 contains moored buoy data from the early years of the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) project of the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), which is still ongoing today. However, NCDC has data only for 1984-92. There was one reporting buoy in 1984. The numbers had increased to 53 by 1992. All buoys were in the equatorial Pacific Ocean between 9N and 8S latitude, and between 137E and 95W longitude. The buoys were called ATLAS (Autonomous Temperature Line Acquisition System) and were designed by PMEL. They made measurements of surface winds, air temperature, relative humidity, sea surface temperature, and ten subsurface water temperatures from a 500m long thermistor cable.
