The Climate Diagnostics Database contains monthly averages of selected fields from the National Meteorological Center's (NMC; now National Centers for Environmental Prediction, NCEP) Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS). The major parameters are monthly averages of the following elements for constant pressure levels of 1000-, 850-, 700-, 500-, 300-, 250-, 200-, 100-, and 50-millibars: 1. U (West/East) component of wind (meters/second), 2. V (South/North) component of wind (meters/second), 3. Temperature (Deg. K), 4. Geopotential height (geopotential meters), 5. The first record in each file consists of four 32-bit integer words, described as follows: Word 1: the year and month in the form YYMM. For example, 8312 means December, 1983. This date specifies the month for which the data in this file is valid. Word 2: the number of 00Z cycle (i.e. analyses valid at 0000 GMT) runs of NMC's final global analysis which were archived during this month. Word 3: same as Word 2, except for 12Z cycle runs. Word 4: sum of Word 2 and Word 3. This number represents the number of analyses which were used to compute the monthly accumulated sums. Records 2-450 contain monthly averages values for one variable type, observational level and hemisphere. Each record is composed on one 32-bit integer word, followed by 5365 32-bit words which are floating point numbers. A more detailed description follows: Word 1: an integer * 4 (4-byte) word which is the number of observations at each grid point of the filed which follows. This integer must by divided into the accumulated sums at each grid point to obtain a monthly mean field. Word 2-5366: an array (145 x 37) of real 4-byte words. The words are floating point (real * 4) numbers, which are monthly accumulated sums for each 2 1/2 degree latitude/longitude intersection of the hemisphere. The first (most rapidly varying) subscript (lets refer to it as "I") represents longitude. The longitude progress eastward from Greenwich, so that I = 1 implies 0 degrees, I = 2 implies 2.5 degrees East, etc. Note that I = 145 is simply a copy of I = 1, for all latitudes. The second (least rapidly varying) subscript (call it "J") represents latitude. The ordering of latitudes in both hemispheres is from south to north. In the Northern Hemisphere records, the data are arranged so that for J = 1, the data are located at the equator; for J = 37, the location is 90 degrees North. The convention for Southern Hemisphere records is that for J = 1, the location is 90 degrees South and for J = 37, the location is the equator. Thus, in both hemispheres the data arrays are oriented from south to north and from west to east.
