    <descript>
The Next Generation RADar (NEXRAD) Level II is digital data set DSI-6500 archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The NEXRAD system comprises over 150 Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) sites throughout the United States and selected overseas locations. This system is a joint effort of the United States Departments of Commerce (DOC), Defense (DOD), and Transportation (DOT). The controlling agencies within those departments are, respectively, the National Weather Service (NWS), Air Weather Service (AWS) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Level II data are recorded at all NWS and most AWS and FAA WSR-88D sites, and are sent to the NCDC for archiving and dissemination. The NEXRAD Level II data are the three meteorological base data quantities: reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. From the Level II quantities, computer processing generates numerous meteorological analysis products known as Level III data. NEXRAD Level III is archived at the NCDC as digital data set DSI-7000 with metadata ID C00708. Level II data are collected and recorded in units of files which typically contain five, six, or ten minutes of base data depending on the volume coverage pattern (VCP). A data file consists of a 24 byte volume scan header record followed by numerous 2432 byte base data and message records. Data are available from June 1991 to 1 day from present.
      <purpose>To detect atmospheric features, such as precipitation and wind, from actively remotely-sensed data for operational forecasting and data research analysis.</purpose>
