The photos contained in this directory were taken on Sep 8-9, 2004. Some were taken after water had receded, but show high water marks on buildings. Filenames indicate the location for each photo. All were taken in Henderson, Transylvania, and Buncombe counties of western North Carolina. For the Swannonoa River (eg, swan-river-1.jpg), high water marks with trees and buildings were measured at ~ 8 feet above road level for Hwy 81. In the Biltmore Village area, high water marks (seen in photos) were generally in the 4-6 foot range, including one reported by a local business as near the top of a speed limit sign, but some levels in low-lying areas would have exceeded 6 feet. The French Broad at Blantyre reached ~ 8 feet above flood stage, when the river gauge apparently stopped transmitting. The photo of the gauge was taken on Sep 8, about 3 hours before the river reached a level of 24.8 feet, and the level was above 24 feet at this time.
