Tornado observations have generally improved with time as better observing practices and instrumentation (especially weather radar and satellites) were utilized.  A national weather radar network was deployed beginning in the 1950's and NEXRAD, which is able to detect tornadic activity that is harder to see with the naked eye, was deployed beginning in the late 1980's.
